My response to a Facebook conversation about the Black community and sagging pants:

“Well for one, the idea that women can’t freely show their breast is a creation of western feminism which is all together oppressive and unnecessary. Two, modern rap is directed towards white middle class youth built on the caricature of Black culture (kinda like blackface but without some white asshole being called racist for doing it). These caricatures will be created of us no matter if we don top hats or fitted caps so why subscribe to their idea of “appropriate?” By the way, most fashions associated with Black culture will not be found in majority of fashion magazines unless cultural appropriation has struck yet again and young skinny white girls have decided to wear your head wraps and afro-puffs because she’s “totes not racist and is like just like you!” In the magazines where you will find some Black fashion (JET, Ebony) you will find a page or two of sagging pants— anywhere from the extreme ass hanging out or the calmer slightly below the crack, you WILL see sagging. Our image as Black people is already “tainted” by our hair and skin— you wear your hair as it grows out your head or dread it up just to keep it tamed and suddenly you’re unprofessional— so what we dress like shouldn’t be demonized because massuh doesn’t like it. (Massuh doesn’t like shit we do but he craves to be like us, btw.) Again I ask, what is the harm with sagging pants as opposed to men with earrings or women who wear snap backs? When one is not at work or in a formal setting shouldn’t one be allowed to express themselves as they damn well please? If sagging = drug dealing and “bitch-hoe” language then what the absolute hell do tattoos represent? Cupcakes and merit badges?? Let’s be real here Black people! If one of our own tries to express their Black identity then let them.”
