It’s like, White Supremacy has given people this position, so you’re going to use it to spearhead anti-racism movements. But when you do this, you’re letting white voices continue to dominate.Replace the name white Privilege with what it is, White Supremacy. You’re claiming to use White Supremacy to fight racism. White voices dominating does not help PoC, it does let people ignore the issue.
That will never happen.
But you can do something. Empower PoC voices. it’s not hard.
Instead of using your space to fight racism, use your space to fight for minority voices to be heard. Don’t dominate the narrative, let minority voices do the talking.
Yeah, a lot of white people preach more than they act. I’ve seen blogs on here of “allies” who only write their own posts and are the loudest in their outrage when racism happens to a PoC (and they post a lot of glee.gifs as reactions).
But then they say, “I’m using my white privilege to fight racism!”
What you’re doing is becoming Tim Wise, who says good things, but has a history of shutting down PoC voices and who profits off of PoCs’ pain and struggles.
What you’re doing is white supremacy. Well, you’re not “doing” it, you’re just re-enforcing it all over again.
I call these type of white people “Tim Wise-wannabes,” and they’re usually the worst type of ally. I usually find that they only get involved in anti-racism because it’s an easy way for their own egos to be stroked. Unfortunately, it is. It’s easy for a white person to overshadow PoC about their own struggles.
They think preaching about their privilege is enough, but they never acknowledge the bigger picture of white supremacy. Because if they do, they would have to acknowledge that they’ve been acting like egotistical shitheads the whole time and will have to step down and really examine themselves.
White folks need to hand the mic over.
